This clinic is designed to help the technician become more proficient in interpreting Fuel Trim PIDs, understanding how they are calculated and to understand what influences them. This information will help provide a diagnostic direction for many different engine performance concerns. Several case studies will be reviewed. Misfire complaints are one of the most commonly experienced today. Within this clinic we provide a combination of methods using scan tool data to help provide a clear path to pinpointing the root cause. Volumetric efficiency diagnostics will be reviewed and discussed through vehicle case study. Putting all the pieces together during an engine diagnostic is a lot like reading a road map; the key to success is finding the shortest path to the destination without getting lost. After completing this clinic, the student will have the knowledge to:

  • Apply a logical path of diagnosing Fuel Trim and Misfire concens on today's vehicles
  • Utilize the graphing function of the scan tool to "trend" important scan tool PID (Parameter Idenification Data) relationships
  • Perform Volumetric Efficiency testing to gain diagnostic direction
  • Diagnose engine Misfire related concerns using the data provided within the scan tool
  • Recognize Fuel System monitoring strategies, operation, and diagnostic routines
